I am Coach Umar Ibrahim Bala (CUIB71) — a basketball coach, sports systems strategist, educator, mentor, author, and builder of communities.
For more than 33 years, basketball has been my classroom, my leadership laboratory, and my platform for transforming lives. My work has taken me across Nigeria, Benin Republic, India, the United States, and beyond — coaching national teams, building academies, and consulting on athlete development for institutions navigating some of the most fragmented sports ecosystems in the world.
That experience taught me one thing above all: talent is never the problem. Structure is. Africa and much of the developing sporting world are not short on ability — they are short on systems that can carry that ability from grassroots to sustainable careers. This realization became the foundation for my work today.

FROM COACHING TO SYSTEMS
From Coaching to Systems
I began as a player and coaching assistant in Nigeria in 1994. Over three decades, I moved through club coaching, national team leadership, university sports direction, and international consulting — eventually stepping back from any single team to focus on something larger: the systems themselves.
That work became Career Pathway Management (CPM) — a professional framework I developed to help athletes, coaches, and institutions navigate fragmented sports ecosystems with structure, transparency, and sustainability. It is the foundation of the consultancy work I now offer to academies, federations, clubs, and individuals.
