Sport in Africa has always been sold as a pathway to youth empowerment, national pride, and economic growth. But after over 60 years of independence, billions in donor funds, and dozens of glossy “development initiatives,” the African sports sector remains weak, underfunded, and commercially stagnant.
This essay examines six structural issues sabotaging Africa’s sports industry — dollarisation of equipment and services, the absence of ecosystem thinking, the poaching agenda of foreign federations and clubs, misaligned development models copied from Europe and the US, development without economic strategy, and a proposed path forward: local manufacturing, domestic leagues powered by data and media, independent pathways, professionalized governance, community-based ecosystems, and protection of African talent from exploitative pathways.
